Overview
There are
currently a substantial number of Shared Resources (SRs) at the Burnham Institute for Medical
Research. Their primary
mission is to provide advanced technology, expertise, and instrumentation to Investigators that may not be easily acquired by individual
laboratories. The SRs provide high quality interactive and cost-effective
services for all Burnham Investigators. Many of the SRs provide
a choice of full service, or investigator training on the advanced
instrumentation for independent use. The
SR
campus map shows the general location of each SR, with more details on
location, services, and equipment available on the individual SR web sites
linked above. If you are looking for information on common-use
equipment, see the Research Support
web site or use the Common Equipment
link (at the top right of the page).
Organization
Each SR has a full-time Director or Manager responsible for day-to-day
operations of their Resource. Many SRs are divided into several Facilities, with
each having its own Director/Manager. The Facility Director or Manager is the most knowledgeable and
appropriate point of contact for questions, requests, or concerns. If
substantive discussions with Facility Director/Manager can not resolve a problem, it
should then be brought to the attention of the Vice President for Scientific
Resources,
Craig Hauser. He supervises the day-to-day operations of the Shared
Resources, and will coordinate a solution if problems arise. This may
include consulting with the Faculty Supervisor, or a faculty member with
expertise in the scientific area and technology of the SR. The Faculty Director
provides scientific guidance to the Shared Resource or specific facility, to assure its quality and to
anticipate the evolving needs of researchers. Overall supervision of the
scientific directions and budgets of the SRs is the responsibility of the
Executive Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Kristiina Vuori.
Feedback
It is essential that users provide management within the SRs with direct feedback
on whether user needs are being met. In addition,
Craig Hauser (x3119) welcomes questions, comments, and suggestions on
all aspects of SR performance.
Cost
Prices for each service are listed on the individual SR web sites.
Prices are almost always lower than comparable commercial services, due to
financial support of the SRs by the Institute, the Cancer Center Support
Grant, and the La Jolla Neurosciences Center Grant. The reduced charge-back rates for Cancer Center, La Jolla Neuroscience,
and Sanford Center members reflects their
~25% support of the SR operating costs. Before the start of large projects, the SR
manager and the Investigator should have a written agreement on the cost,
scope, and details of the project.
